This epic slice of scenery gets very low amount of human traffic while also being fairly easy to access. Many locals do not even know of this place. All the more reason I feel protective over this discovery as it is FREE and only a little over an hour away from the city of Grand Junction, CO. My concern with giving away locations is always due to how increased human impact and crowding energy could potentially scar and disrespect the magic. So I hope you can also treat it reverently. It is a quietly serene and powerful-feeling spot in the wild that will feel incredible to have most likely to yourself. The primary view from the top of the waterfall looks out west towards the grand valley below, making this an incredible place to observe the sunset. All of the setting to enjoy here is had from above. There is no way to reach the bottom of the waterfall. Before the water rolls off, facing the other direction, you will be in mostly flat terrain, quite sun exposed, and seeing a gentle creek meander across the flat land before cliffs and steep wooded slopes drop out of nowhere. A chasm opens up for the stream to rage downward. There can commonly be winds that kick up mist from the waterfall to envelope and grace your senses. It can feel like you are at the edge of the world. At about 10,000 ft elevation via dirt roads that are closed most of the year, you can only reach here roughly between June-Sept. Can you believe that you could camp right along the edge next to it too if you really wanted?! Upon writing this, I have yet to camp overnight here but I am aware you are permitted to do so. Be mindful nights and mornings up this high would be quite chilly. If you have a solid high clearance 4×4 vehicle, you could get pretty dang close to it. For more standard cars, the closest place to park is about a mile away. The walk from there is very simple and a casual stroll with nothing steep or tricky. Bonus: if you’re willing to explore more off trail and be riskier… to get the ultimate views of the waterfall itself and interaction with it, hop across the creek and pluck around the terrain over there (the photos in my collage come from that side). These are the coordinates for parking with low clearance + no 4×4: 39.029379, -108.222029 These are the coordinates for the waterfall: 39.038541, -108.220623
There are two routes you can take to get there (from Grand Junction). Coming around from the northeast you’d be on the more prominently paved path. But I highly recommend taking the route coming up from the southwest. This way is much more scenic as you climb slowly up the famed Lands End Road that winds the mountainside. Any vehicle can make it this route.
